Spa-Francorchamps, October 23/24 – A technical problem cost MIM driver David Vidales the chance for gaining more precious points at Spa in the seventh round of the 2020 Eurocup F.Renault series. Yet, the 18-year old Spaniard retains third place in the championship overall standings, having succeeded in taking at least one point in what proved to be a very difficult race weekend for him and JD Motorsport Team.
Vidales had to start race 1 from the back of the grid, having to serve a penalty from the previous event at Montmelò. On tricky track conditions, he managed to make his way up to ninth place before the race itself was red-flagged following De Gerus’ crash against the barriers. After a brief safety car spell, the race director deemed the weather conditions too dangerous to continue. As a consequence, only half of the points were awarded, but Vidales brought home one full point because of fifth-placed Haverkort ‘wild card’ status.
The second race of the weekend took place on a slowly drying track and once again Vidales was able to jump several other drivers at the start from tenth on the grid. Thanks to an aggressive driving he quickly recovered to 4th, but the problem that he had experienced right from the getaway – seemingly a slipping clutch – grow worse and worse and he could only hold on until the second-last lap before driving back to the pits.
“I know most people would blame our performance on the tyre choice” shared David “but the problems we had was mechanic. Now we head back to Imola, where I won my first two car races this year. All drivers know this track, so I am looking forward to a challenge where we can have all the elements to do well”.
